The winter of year 1771 had been a long one, not only because the food and vegetation was scarce but also because the royal family of Rayn had heard news that darkness was coming. Lord Rayn masked his true feelings on the subject, brushing the idea away. His wife’s personal seer had brought the news to him in the middle of the winter with much urgency, though Lord Rayn wasn’t much of a believer of such nonsense, especially coming from a seer. His human upbringing didn’t allow for thoughts and ideas of “fantasy and whimsical” things… though, his opinion did change slightly when he fell in love with his soul mate. Muinra was elven, the most beautiful being Lord Rayn had ever lay eyes upon. At first sight, he wasn’t sure that he wasn’t dreaming, and still after 20 years, he still wonders if he is.
Anyway, back to the story…..
Lord Rayn ignored the seer’s warnings, but deep inside he wondered how much truth there was in them. Secretly, he would have meetings with his royal guard, telling them of the warnings and at the very least to be prepared in the event that the Darkness does come.
Ah…. The Darkness. The story is that the Darkness is exactly that, dark. There is no warning of it. Truth be told, there is no fighting against it really. Only a very strong and pure magical being could stop such evil. The demons of the Darkness, come in the night. They destroy all that is in their path. They take the breath of all souls, they feed on the innocent, both physically and magically, thus making them stronger and harder to defeat.
As the long winter progresses, Lord Rayn readies his army, recruiting every able bodied man. The carpenters of the Kingdom secretly build a small, one room cabin deep in the woods, meant to shelter his wife and young daughter, Calysta. Now, Lord Rayn waits. His thoughts wonder what is to come, when is it to come? Will his Empire fall at the hands of the Darkness? Has he done all he can to prepare? Only time will tell......
The night falls on the last day of winter and the feeling of threat has subsided. The Lord and his army has become relaxed and less alert. All in the Kingdom rest with ease and sleep peacefully......
Deep in the night, a dark mist surrounds the small Empire, rising from the depths of the earth. Quietly, it lurks in the shadows, flowing like a soft breeze into the small cabins which house the villagers, pulling the life from them until there is no life left. The Darkness gains more power and strength from the more lives it takes as it travels north towards the castle.
Awakened suddenly, overwhelmed with a feeling of suffocation and dispair, Calysta quickly rises from her bed, and runs to the room of the Elven Seer. The seer is already awake and dressed, looking to Calysta as she enters with saddened eyes. "They are here child", her words barely audible as she extends her hand to the girl, offering magical charms for protection. The seer looks at Calysta sternly, " take these, the magic is in you. You must get your mother girl, and run like the wind to the shelter.. GO!"
Calysta snatches the charms from the old woman and does as she is told. Her and her mother run deep into the forest towards the small cabin, the mist from the Darkness rising at their heels beneath them. Suddenly before them, the Darkness rises, taking the appearance of a three headed devil. Calysta stops, frozen as her mother pushes her back and stands guard in front of her. As the Darkness approaches slowly, the Royal Elven woman lifts her hands, extending her arms. The leaves rise and twirl as she creates a barrier for herself and her offspring. Calysta watches in awe, unaware her mother possessed such power. The woman keeping her eyes locked on the Demon, speaks to her daughter "Caly, use your magic, you have it within you. Hurry". Calysta attempts to stand strong, though scared to death. She closes her eyes tightly, lifting her arms slightly as she does her best to build up whatever magic she has within her. A ball of magical white light forms between her hands, small at first, but grows larger the more she focuses. Finally, she throws it towards the Darkness. A deep dark laugh is heard, and slowly fades as does the large figure. Calysta's mother becomes very pale, but pushes forward best she can. Upon entering the small dwelling, she collapses on the floor, unable to stand any longer. Calysta falls by her mothers side, looking down at her concerned. "Mother?"
Lady Rayn, opens her eyes slowly, her breath shallow as she whispers to her child "I love you my daughter, never forget who you really are... ". A tear slowly forms and rolls down Calysta's cheek. Her mother is gone.
Calysta hides in the corner of the dwelling for days, waiting for her father to come and tell her everything is ok. He never comes. No one ever comes. She is alone. It is done, the Darkness has won.
